Description
Carob is a large tree in the pea family native to the Mediterranean region. One of its other names is St. John’s bread, for St. John the Baptist who reputedly survived in the wilderness eating honey and carob bean pods. Carob refers to the fruit of the tree, which are flat, bean-like pods with numerous tiny seeds. These fruits are used as a substitute for chocolate in sweets, baked goods and beverages. Dried carob pods taste like chocolate but are lower in sugar and lack theobromine, which is the toxic ingredient in chocolate to some animals and an allergen to some people.Uses:
